Game-Changing Anti-Bacterial Laminate

A Game-Changing Anti-Bacterial Laminate Has Arrived

SafeLam - kills bacteria on contact

SafeLam - kills viruses on contact

SafeLam - kills coronavirus on contact

SafeLam - works no matter how many people handle it

SafeLam - makes printed surfaces safer to handle

In these days of COVID-19, with the threat of coronavirus lurking at every turn, widespread potential danger is closer than at any other time in living memory. Every surface could be a risk to life and limb. Even humble brochures, business cards, postcards and greetings cards could carry the virus and help it to spread. That’s why the arrival of a revolutionary new coating for printed items is such a game-changer. ‘SafeLam’ is turning out to be quite a saviour, arriving like a knight in shining armour to ensure that booklets, catalogues, mailers or display graphics remain safe and sanitary, irrespective of how many people have touched them.

At first glance, SafeLam appears to be a standard gloss or matt plastic laminate, much like any other. However, buried within the make-up of its surface lies a secret weapon that’s turning out to be key in the fight against COVID-19. SafeLam’s remarkable laminate surface contains an antimicrobial agent that kills up to 99% of harmful microbes that come into contact with it. That means that bacteria and viruses — including coronavirus — are stopped in their tracks and neutralised before they can do any harm. They don’t even stand a chance to survive, let alone spread.

SafeLam is ISO 22196 accredited for its antimicrobial properties

SafeLam antivirus lamination - available in gloss or matt finishAvailable in Matt and Gloss Finishes

SafeLam looks like standard lamination and, as such, is essentially a thin plastic coating that is applied under pressure to the surface of printed documents. The end result is either a super-glossy finish to the printing, or a more subtle, matt look. As with standard lamination, the choice between matt and gloss will be a subjective one. Gloss lamination tends to give the printed image a bit more ‘punch’ as well as the highly reflective surface. Matt lamination is more subtle, giving the printed item a low-lustre sheen and a slightly lower contrast to the underlying printed tones. Matt tends to feel silky too. Some may argue it also looks a little more up-market than gloss. Either, however, will protect the printed item from moisture and from wear and tear (indeed, items that are laminated tend to be very hard to tear). And now, with the arrival of SafeLam lamination, it will protect people from coronavirus, COVID-19 and general germs and bacteria too. That’s amazing when you think about it.

An Anti-Virus Coating for Brochures, Business Cards, Display Graphics, Menus & More

The possible applications for SafeLam anti-virus lamination are almost endless. Put simply, it is likely to save lives.

Any printed item that is likely to be handled will be a good candidate for SafeLam. Because they’re handed out quite a bit, business cards are an obvious example. With SafeLam’s antimicrobial surface, they can be passed around from person to person without the risk of passing on coronavirus. It’s the same with menus in cafés, hotels, restaurants and bars. Usually lots of people will handle the same menu and, of course, with coronavirus still at large, that would normally represent quite a potential health hazard. Well, not with SafeLam! It’ll kill bacteria and viruses on contact, irrespective of how many people have handled the same menu. Once bars and eateries are fully open again to the public, SafeLam will prove itself invaluable and will work invisibly to keep everyone safer. Brochures, booklets, annual reports, postcards and even bound manuals, packaging, flyers and posters will benefit from SafeLam’s antimicrobial surface. Roller banners are another good example, as plenty of companies and organisations are currently using them to display safety information, as workplaces re-open after the lock-down. But the real winner is the healthcare industry. Medical professionals regularly give patients and colleagues printed documents. With SafeLam applied to their surfaces, they will greatly reduce the risk of coronavirus being inadvertently transferred from one person to another.

    Safeguarding health & well-being

“The health & well-being of both customers and staff is our top priority”

Rest assured that we’re doing all we can to safeguard everyone and to keep everybody as safe as possible. We’ve implemented various measures towards this end …

Strict hygiene standards are being followed on every front. This ranges from anti-bacterial hand wash, soap and disinfectant being available in strategic locations around our offices, print rooms, work stations, wash rooms and public areas. We’re regularly disinfecting, keeping a sensible social distance from each other and from the public, and encouraging policies like remote working wherever possible. We also encourage customers and prospects to liaise with us remotely if they can. In this day and age it’s easy enough to telephone, email and pass files, images and artwork electronically, so this is reasonably straight forward. We ask customers to remain careful and follow social distancing guidelines. That’s especially important where customers have recently been abroad, in particular to a country that’s been badly affected by the Coronavirus.

We’re also staggering shifts here at WCS Digital Print so that staff and management can avoid the busiest travel times, again reducing contact with other members of the public to a bare minimum. Don’t forget too that we have several print shops in London, so can focus work in the safest location should any geographical area become more adversely affected than another. It’s also worth pointing out that virtually all our printing and production processes are undertaken entirely in-house, limiting the need for contact with others even further.

    Eco-friendly printers in London WC1

    Eco-friendly printers in London WC1

WCS Digital Print also plays its part in the fight against global warming and unnecessary waste. We’ve ploughed money into ‘green’ printing solutions like eco-friendly, low-energy printing machines. We’ve radically expanded the choice of eco-friendly papers and boards available to our customers. We also try to use ‘green’ couriers to deliver printing across London wherever possible. Even our website is hosted on green servers that minimise energy use and keep heat emissions down to a minimum. And rest assured; we collect as many of our paper and board offcuts as we can. That’s quite a lot of material each month that goes straight back into the recycling chain … to make more paper, without the need to cut down trees.

    Green papers and boards

The choice of ‘green’ papers and boards at WCS Digital Print includes anything from papers manufactured entirely from sustainably-sourced materials to 100% recycled stock. We offer a mixture too. Just one example is paper made partly from recycled pulp and partly using pulp from sustainable, FSC accredited sources. FSC is the Forest Stewardship Council. They promote responsible forestry, ensuring that FSC accredited products protect the forests themselves as well as the wildlife and communities that call the forests home. We also offer papers and boards that have no wood pulp in them whatsoever, for example paper made of sustainably farmed cotton. This type of paper also benefits from being beautifully ‘crisp’, which is great for high quality stationery, upmarket annual reports and suchlike. All these different stock options mean you have a choice of exactly ‘how green’ your printed items are and what they cost to produce — that’s a cost on several levels, when you think about it.

    There is no ‘Planet B’

These days, more and more people are looking for eco-friendly options in their daily lives, including everything from food to transport — and even printing. After all, with temperatures repeatedly hitting all-time records around the world, we all need to wake up and to play our part in helping the planet recover — before it’s too late.

“We all need to wake up and to play our part in helping the planet recover — before it’s too late.

We’re seeing ice caps melting at unprecedented rates, raging infernos causing devastation on both the American and Australian continents, widespread floods in UK locations that have never been experienced in living memory and rising sea levels across the globe. We’re finally waking up to the devastation we’re causing to the air, land and oceans, with plastic and other waste washing up on previously idyllic beaches and wildlife suffering terribly as a consequence. We’re also seeing vast swathes of previously virgin rainforests being plundered for timber, wood pulp and palm oil, to the detriment of wildlife, the environment and, ultimately to us. There is no ‘Planet B’ though. Without the rainforests, animals will face extinction and the ‘lungs’ of the world will not be there to absorb the carbon dioxide from what will become an ever-hotter, planet-sized greenhouse. The Benefits of Great Graphic Design

The benefits of great graphic design

We promised to tell you more about the value of a great graphic design service in our previous post and that’s what we’ll be covering right here …

The bottom line is that great graphic design can make the difference between the success or failure of your sales and marketing efforts. That’s incredibly important. Quite simply, without excellent graphic design, you could be throwing money down the drain — remember to bear that in mind when you spend money on your sales and marketing, including production of printed literature, exhibition displays, website design and even adverts in magazines. While it’s great to generate some top-notch printing, what good is it if the subject matter looks amateurish, unattractive and the sales proposition or key message is unclear? All too often, for example, we see badly designed brochures, flyers and posters that shout messages from every centimetre of printed space. All that achieves is a din of noise and an unclear core message.

That’s where good graphic design can really turn things around.

“Great graphic design can make the difference between the success or failure of your sales and marketing efforts”

As well as making documents look attractive and eye-catching, a good graphic designer will ensure that the key message gets understood right away, with clear communication and careful ‘weighting’ of all the subsidiary information that follows it. Approaching things this way means that your sales message is seen and understood in just seconds, or even milliseconds, and then the prospect knows where to look next. That’s all very important because most people will usually make a decision on whether to continue reading within just a few moments. If the message is not crystal clear virtually instantly, most will simply move on.

    Printing services in London WC1

We thought we’d give you a general overview of specifically the printing services on offer here at WCS Digital Print. They are extremely comprehensive! We’re a printer that’s based in Mount Pleasant so, if you are based anywhere near Clerkenwell, Farringdon or the London WC1 area, we could be a very useful and convenient printer for you, your company or organisation. So, take a moment to have a read and perhaps bookmark this website in your browser for easy future reference.

As you’ll learn below, we can print pretty much anything. That’s because we have incredible print facilities in-house along with the very best printers, print finishers and graphic designers in the area. Our print production equipment is an optimum mixture of state-of-the-art digital machinery and traditional equipment. The modern machinery allows for high speed, high quality production while the traditional facilities allow processes and finishes that quite simply would not be possible with digital equipment. Spot colour printing is just one example and you can read more about that later in this post …

    We're digital printersWe’re digital printers

Firstly, we’re digital printers. Our state-of-the-art digital printing equipment allows for printing at high speed, high quality and all without fuss or delay. No printing plates are required with digital print, so it’s generally a faster, easier, more hassle-free process despite being very high quality. Digital printing allows for true ‘on demand’ printing. So, whether you need just one copy of several thousand at the drop of a hat, our digital printing presses ensure that it’s a breeze.

Digital printing is most economical for short and medium runs.

Litho printers in London WC1We’re litho printers

Despite our name, WCS Digital are also traditional litho printers. In fact, we are amongst only a few WC1 printers that have lithographic printing presses in-house. What this means for you is that we can supply printing processes and finishes that are simply not possible with modern digital equipment. For example, we can print in true spot colours including fluorescent colours, metallic inks and those Pantone colours that are problematic using digital processes (e.g. Reflex Blue … with litho printing it’s no problem at all but you’d never get the required colour saturation using a digital process). So, if you are looking for true Pantone accuracy, super-saturated colours, metallics and vibrant fluorescents, then give our litho printing service a try. When compared to digital printing, the need for printing plates means that there’s a little more set-up required with litho, but the quality and colour accuracy is simply unsurpassed.

Litho printing is even more economical than digital printing when volumes are particularly high. It should also be noted that litho printing represents the pinnacle of print quality. As such, litho printing is the benchmark against which all other commercial printing processes are compared.Thermographic printing service in London WC1

    Thermographic printing services

Our litho presses also allow for thermographic printing, or ‘thermo’ printing as it’s more commonly known. Thermography represents a much cheaper alternative to spot UV varnishing although tends to work best in small areas rather than covering the entire sheet. We’ll write separate, stand-alone, posts about UV varnishing and thermo printing in the future — so do come back regularly if this is of interest and you’d like to learn more about these innovative and highly attractive finishes.

Large format printing services in Clerkenwell & FarringdonWe’re large format printers

Our large format printing service does exactly what it says on the tin. In other words, it’s all about our ability to print large or very large printed items, courtesy of our large format presses and machinery. The service is perfect for the production of things like posters, in-store display graphics, banners, exhibition graphics, signage, roller banners, architectural plans and so on. Colours are vibrant, tones are deep and the quality is exceptional. So, whether you want something printed for your wall at home or for a large scale exhibition display at a trade show, our large format printing service is just the ticket.
